As industrial ventures such as canal and railway companies required capital beyond what any single investor could provide, formal stock exchanges emerged in Britain to let investors buy and sell shares in these enterprises. This let firms pool capital from many investors and let those investors trade ownership stakes, supporting the large-scale investment that industrialization required.
