The findings of this systematic review highlight the need for increased community engagement, stakeholder input and prior needs assessment in designing and implementing SRE programs in future. There is also a need for greater theoretical underpinning in future SRE interventions, with stronger consideration placed on the values and ethical stances of all those involved, including researchers, program developers and facilitators, support staff and the individuals receiving SRE interventions.

Many of the interventions reviewed were effective. However, there are limitations and sources of bias within these results. The SRE programs used non-validated outcome measures and provided insufficient statistical information to calculate effect size, largely due to small sample sizes.

Therefore, the strength of evidence within this review is weak, despite most studies reporting efficacy.
