Gastric banding is a type of bariatric surgery where a band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach, creating a small pouch. This pouch restricts food intake by filling up quickly. Digested food then moves from the esophagus into this small pouch, through the rest of the stomach, and finally into the duodenum.
