Results from this article show that males' average grades are slightly better than those of females for all 3 of the compulsory CTCS courses. Of the 17 electives offered, there were 4 in which no females enrolled. Across the other 13 CTCS electives that had enrollment from both genders, there are 8 in which the average grades of females are slightly higher than those of males. The averages grades of females and males are the same for one of the electives. Moreover, although there are 4 classes in which females are not enrolled, two classes called "Information Theory and Coding” and “Advanced Computer Architectures" have a higher percentage of female students than male students. 

Gender gap in CTCS computer science courses

Of the 8 compulsory SS CS courses, there are 6 in which males have higher average grades and 2 in which females have higher average grades. Out of the 29 SS electives, there are 2 in that had no female enrollment. Of the remaining 27 that had enrollment from both genders, the average grade of male students is higher in 15, whereas the average grade for females was higher in 11 of the electives. In one elective, females and males had the same average grade.

Gender gap in SS computer science courses

This study examined the grades of all students who graduated from the the Department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Peloponnese, Greece between 2002 and 2008. There were 69 male graduates and 20 female graduates, making the overall study sample size 89. The grades that were analyzed came from courses  either classified as Computer Technology and Computer Systems (CTCS) courses or Software Systems (SS) courses, and looked at both compulsory (required) courses and electives.

Previous literature has shown that during undergraduate studies in CS, females more frequently choose to take courses dealing with the theoretical division of computing, while males are more likely to choose courses in the Software Systems division of computing. To determine if the gender gap in CS is related to the selection made by female and male students, the goal of this research article is to investigate the difference in achievement between genders across various CS subjects.
