Gestational Diabetes
When a woman is pregnant, the hormones that support the baby can sometimes block insulin uptake to the mother's body; this is called insulin resistance. To compensate, mothers take up to three times as much insulin. It can also start if the mother's body does not produce enough insulin during pregnancy, causing hyperglycemia.
