Provide parents with a feasible strategy to help minimize or prevent the anticipated loss of literacy skills amongst their kindergarten children. Additionally this study is intended to help policy makers, educators, and parents during the process of making decisions for how to best stimulate literacy skills during school closures through providing information.

Kindergarten children have lost a significant amount of literacy skills due to school closings. The effects of school closures due to the pandemic can also be compared to the effects of school closures for children during the summer also referred to as the 'summer slump'.

Goal of Study of Kindergarten Literacy Loss During School Closures

This study uses data from a large national longitudinal study on literacy loss from regular school closures during the summer amongst kindergarten students and then uses this data to predict the future literacy loss impact of extended school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since activities like summer school, library visits, and summer literacy activities are not available due to COVID-19 closures, this study looks into an alternative covid-safe option (reading to your kids at home) to determine its effectiveness in mitigating literacy loss amongst Kindergarten children during the pandemic. The study uses U.S. literacy scores to model literacy loss.
