Group research is the most common quantitative research approach in psychology, characterized by studying a large number of participants and combining their data to draw general conclusions about human behavior. In this methodology, researchers primarily analyze and interpret behavior by examining aggregated statistical metrics across the entire sample, such as group means and standard deviations, rather than focusing on the detailed behavior of individual subjects.

Group Research

While both single-subject and group research are quantitative methodologies, they differ significantly in their sample size and analytical focus. Single-subject research focuses on the detailed experimental analysis of a small number of individuals (typically two to ten). Conversely, group research—the more common approach in psychology—involves studying large numbers of participants and analyzing their behavior primarily through aggregated metrics like group means and standard deviations.

Comparison of Single-Subject and Group Research

A significant concern regarding data analysis in group research is that focusing exclusively on group means can be highly misleading because it obscures important individual differences. For example, if a treatment produces a strong positive effect on half of the participants and an equally strong negative effect on the other half, these opposing effects will statistically cancel each other out in a traditional between-subjects experiment. As a result, the treatment group's mean will appear identical to the control group's mean, falsely implying that the intervention had no effect when it actually impacted every single participant.
