Hazardous Drinking and Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Hazardous drinking is harmful to patients who have depression due to the negative impacts that could be present. Studies have found that there is a relationship between depression symptoms and heavy drinking. Moderate drinking is a risk as well due to there being an increase in antidepressant response, being less obedient to follow treatments, and having more side effects. Drug use is also harmful for those with depression because it can interfere with depression treatment. MI is very popular for alcohol and drug use because of the motivation aspect to change behavioral patterns that are being exhibited. In the study, it is hypothesized that the MI intervention method decreased hazardous drinking and possibly drug use and depression.
