Non-binary and genderqueer people do not identify within the gender binary system (male vs. female), or exclusively in man/male or woman/female categories.

Non-binary and genderqueer individuals have been found to have a higher rate of psychological problems when compared to cisgender individuals. A higher risk of violence, suicidal ideation, and rates of self-harm among NBGQ people have been found, coupled with lower perceived social support. NBGQ individuals are more likely to report a self-perceived need for mental health care.

Mental Health Differences Between Non-Binary/Genderqueer and Cisgender Individuals

NBGQ individuals have been  found to be less likely to have ever attempted suicide or sought help for depression and anxiety, and had higher life satisfaction than binary trans (BT) people. However, less social support, higher rates of substance use, and higher rates of personality and eating disorders are reported by NBGQ (in comparison to BT individuals.)

Mental Health Differences Between Non-Binary/Genderqueer and Binary Trans Individuals

NBGQ individuals have been found to be more compliant with routine physical healthcare, including pap tests and uterine cancer screenings when compared to binary transgender people assigned female at birth. On the contrary, other findings have shown NBGQ are less likely to have a family doctor and self-reported less access to gender affirming care (i.e., hormones).

Non-binary and genderqueer (NBGQ) people are a mariginalized population, and thus are at risk of stigmatization and negative physical and mental health outcomes.
