Patients can go directly to an audiologist or hearing aid dispenser to purchase a device. Dispensers must refer the patient to an ear, nose and throat specialist or audiological centre to be medically assessed if there are medical concerns on testing (severe hearing loss, asymmetric hearing loss, air–bone gap, poor speech recognition, young patients)
