Guideline 2: Help Users Adopt More Efficient Methods in Complex Applications

Users of complex applications rarely become experts on their own; over time they tend to settle into familiar but inefficient methods rather than discovering faster ones. This stagnation reduces productivity. Designers should proactively surface more efficient methods to users, but should do so unobtrusively (e.g., contextual hints or in-context prompts) rather than through long, disruptive tutorials.
