Previously it was believed that cellular disorganization might have risen during early cell development but recent studies have shown that new neurons are generated in hippocampus throughout life which indicates that abnormal neurogenesis may be responsible for schizophrenia

Hippocampus: as visible in the diagram below, there is cellular disarray of the hippocampus in chronic schizophrenia. 

The hippocampus is divided into 3 regions: CA1, CA2 and CA3 as shown in part D. In part E, we find that hippocampal pyramidal cells of patients appear disorganized in these hippocampal cross sections.

The walls of lateral ventricles are formed with the help of hippocampus and amygdala, any alteration in these parts can cause enlargement of the ventricles in patients suffering from schizophrenia.

Twin studies: Hippocampus and amygdala are smaller in twin who is suffering from schizophrenia 

The postmortem studies have shown patients have abnormalities in many parts of limbic system such as hippocampus, amygdala and para hippocampal regions.
