One in every three people who suffer from postpartum psychosis has been diagnosed with a psychological disorder. The most common psychological disorder that co-occurs with postpartum psychosis is bipolar disorder. Schizophrenia spectrum disorders and major depressive disorders also increase the risk of developing postpartum psychosis.

Specialists hypothesize that postpartum psychosis can be a combination of these factors:
* Hormonal changes.
* History of psychological disorders.
* Family history of psychological disorders, especially postpartum psychosis.
* Number of pregnancies.
* Sleep deprivation.
