Of the 38.6 million people living with HIV/AIDS globally, almost 25 million (65%) live in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2018 there were 470,000 deaths in Africa attributed to HIV/AIDs. In the United States in 2018 there were only 15,820 deaths attributed to HIV/AIDs. 

Prevalence of HIV/AIDs in Africa

There are, at present, twenty-two anti-HIV drugs that have been formally licensed for clinical use in the treatment of HIV infections (AIDS): zidovudine, didanosine, zalcitabine, stavudine, lamivudine, abacavir, emtricitabine, tenofovir, nevirapine, delavirdine, efavirenz, saquinavir, ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, amprenavir, lopinavir, atazanavir. Only 64% of the people living with HIV/AIDs in Africa are able to access antiretroviral treatment. A large part of the problem is the people who are not yet diagnosed and don't know to access the medication treatments.
