How Covid-19 can damage the brain

  • Some infected by covid-19 experience neurological symptoms
  • Psychosis symptoms: Hallucinations, changes in personality, disorientation--DELIRIUM
  • Swelling and inflammation in brain tissue, deterioration of myelin
  • Can cause stroke, brain hemorrhage, and memory loss
  • Unsure why it has such a significant affect on the brain
  • In UK: tracked 125 people who had neurological symptoms--"Of these, 62% had experienced damage to the brain’s blood supply, such as strokes and hemorrhages, and 31%had altered mental states, such as confusion or prolonged unconsciousness — sometimes accompanied by encephalitis, the swelling of brain tissue"
  • Not all those with neurological symptoms have been extremely sick/in hospital
  • Estimated that between 10,000-50,000 people have experienced psychological symptoms
  • Olfactory nerve may be root of entry for virus to get to central nervous system
  • Virus is hard to find in the brain compared to other organs, might be because ACE2 (which the virus uses to enter cells) is not as commonly expressed in the brain
