Blake while in hospital was initially handcuffed to the hospital bed, despite his inability to walk, with deputies constantly watching him. This was brought to the attention of the public by Blake's father and resulted in public outcry and Disability Rights Wisconsin condemning police actions. Public pressure led to the police removing the handcuffs and the deputy presence.

Blake survived the shooting. However, two bullets severed his spinal cord. This left Blake paralyzed from the waist down, experiencing neuropathy, and colon, small intestine, liver, and kidney damage.

The entire incident was caught on film by a neighbor and published on social media, resulting in mass protests in Kenosha. Officer Rusten Sheskey claimed the shooting was in self-defense. No charges were filed against Officer Sheskey.
