There are 2 types of negative space: 1) micro and 2) macro negative space. The space between bigger components in a frame is macro, and the space between smaller components is called micro space.

The vast majority of macro layout compositions are symmetrical with repeating patterns and rhythmic structure. However, symmetry and asymmetry can be used together. Since asymmetrical patterns stand out, it should be used with elements that stand out also.

Implicit Content Relationship is a concept referring to the phenomenon that white space isn’t immediately or directly noticeable in the user’s eyes, but rather, white space shows itself implicitly.

"Macro and micro-relationships are developed via space whether intentional or not. This implicit relationship is defined by how much space exists between two objects compared to everything else on the page."
