Identifying Expressions and Equations

To determine whether a mathematical statement is an expression or an equation, check for the presence of an equal sign:

  • 2(x+3)=102(x + 3) = 10 is an equation because two expressions are connected with an equal sign.
  • 4(y1)+14(y - 1) + 1 is an expression because there is no equal sign.
  • x÷25x \div 25 is an expression because there is no equal sign.
  • y+8=40y + 8 = 40 is an equation because two expressions are connected with an equal sign.
