Identifying Expressions and Equations

To determine whether a mathematical statement is an expression or an equation, check for the presence of an equal sign. If an equal sign connects two sides, it is an equation; if there is no equal sign, it is an expression. For example:

  • $2(x + 3) = 10$ is an equation because two expressions are connected with an equal sign.
  • $4(y - 1) + 1$ is an expression because there is no equal sign.
  • xĂ·25x \div 25 is an expression because there is no equal sign.
  • y+8=40y + 8 = 40 is an equation because two expressions are connected with an equal sign.
