Parents become used to interpreting their child's needs or behaviors. This should be the same for parents of children with ASD. Is there a way to measure or use knowledge that the parents have to increase the interpretation ability of the coders in future studies? Is there a way to see how much better parents are at understanding their child's gestures?

Parents of children with ASD and gestures

It sounds as though the people coding the gestures are people with TD, not people with ASD. Would there be a difference or clearer understanding of the gestures if the coders had the identity/mental workings as the people whose behavior they are coding?

Controled for age and IQ, people with ASD have fewer gestures per verbal phrase compared to TD people. They also tend to have shorter narratives when talking/describing events. There tends to be a general similarity in the rate of gestures they make per type of gesture.


Gestures generated by people with ASD tend to be 'less clearly produced,' meaning the coders found it difficult to classify or interperate gestures. This may be due to motor functions or timing of the gesture in relation to speech.
