Stage one is the acute pain stage and is characterized by common reactions such as fear and anxiety and worry. It is in the transition from acute to chronic pain that neural networks involved in memory and mood and many other things are altered, which has a tremendous impact not only on perception of pain but "global functioning" (Thertus, 2020).

One study that conducted a systematic review of literature detailing the psychosocial impact of pain in patients with trigeminal neuralgia found that "psychological support within a multidisciplinary team is recommended for TN patients" as a way to help patients "cope better with their chronic disorder and to improve the efficacy of treatment" (Melek et al., 2018).

Navigating trigeminal neuralgia, its pain, and the often alienating effects of its pain can be extremely difficult, and so many groups and healthcare providers- like Stanford Healthcare- have formed support groups and other programs to help those diagnosed.
