Somatic refers to key body processes that relate to affective and emotional responses. The somatic marker hypothesis is a framework for decision making that values long term over short term consequences. Neural substances that regulate homeostasis, emotion and feeling are key with this hypothesis.

The system of somatic states is often called the impulsive system. This is due to its fast/automatic properties for processing the affective/emotional attributes associated with a particular stimulus. The amygdala is one of the key components in this system.

An impulse is related to an instinct. It is a discharge of energy from the id. Impulsivity is a type of personality trait and/or temperament. An impulse  and impulsivity are associated with a response tendency that can come in different forms. This can be cognitive, motoric, emotional, or even motivational.

Impulse control refers to an individual's attempt to change or suppress the response tendency from an impulse.This modification may occur in relation to situational demands, information, memory and self- appraisal. The ego exerts impulse control in an attempt to relieve tension in a manner that fits the situation.
