Falsifiability is a defining characteristic of any scientific claim, meaning it must be expressed in a way that allows for potential observations that would count as evidence against it. As argued by philosopher Karl Popper, if a claim cannot be tested and potentially proven wrong by systematic observation, it does not address an empirical question and is therefore considered pseudoscientific rather than scientific.

Falsifiability

A hypothesis is a specific prediction regarding the outcome of a particular scientific study. In the hypothetico-deductive method, hypotheses are derived directly from broader theories and are then tested empirically to support or reevaluate those theories. Importantly, disconfirming a hypothesis does not necessarily mean that the underlying theory from which it was derived has been disproved.

Hypothesis

The James-Lange theory generates falsifiable hypotheses, which can be tested empirically. For example, a key hypothesis derived from the theory is that individuals unable to perceive the physiological changes accompanying emotional events would experience emotions differently. Research on individuals with significant spinal cord injuries, who have limited awareness of their bodily arousal, was conducted to test this. The findings revealed that while these individuals' emotional experiences may be less intense, they do still experience emotion. This outcome challenges the original formulation of the James-Lange theory and demonstrates its falsifiable nature.

Testing the Falsifiability of the James-Lange Theory

A researcher is considering two different statements about human memory. 

Statement 1: "Recalling memories is an inherently good and noble process for the human spirit."
Statement 2: "Individuals who get at least 8 hours of sleep will recall a list of 20 words more accurately than individuals who get fewer than 6 hours of sleep."

Based on the principles of scientific inquiry, which statement is considered testable and why?

An example of a falsifiable scientific claim is the assertion that women talk more than men. This statement is scientifically testable because researchers can conduct systematic empirical observations of talking behaviors; if the resulting data demonstrate that men talk as much as or more than women, that observable evidence would directly contradict and disprove the original claim.

Example of a Falsifiable Claim

An example of an unfalsifiable claim is the assertion by proponents of extrasensory perception (ESP) or psychic abilities that their powers conveniently vanish when they are closely monitored or tested. This claim cannot be evaluated scientifically because any failure to perform better than chance is simply blamed on the presence of observers, ensuring there is no possible experimental outcome that would ever be accepted as evidence against the existence of ESP.

Example of an Unfalsifiable Claim

A fundamental characteristic of an effective scientific hypothesis is that it must be testable and falsifiable. This implies that researchers must be able to investigate the hypothesis using scientific methods. Furthermore, aligning with Karl Popper’s falsifiability criterion, researchers must be able to gather empirical evidence that could potentially disprove the hypothesis if it is factually incorrect.
