Inhaled interferon beta-1a formulation, otherwise known as SNG001, is comprised up of recombinant interferon-β and is administered via an inhaled nebulizer for individuals with viral illnesses of the lower respiratory tract. There is growing evidence demonstrating that SARS-CoV-2 decreases interferon-β levels which is problematic considering that interferon-β is a key component of immune responses in the lungs. Using an inhaled nebulizer allows for interferon-β concentrations to be high enough in the lungs to produce a localized antiviral defense response in the lungs.
