Inflammation is the overall response of the body to injury or invasion, it brings the response to the infection. Inflammation helps eliminate the infection, repair the damage and remove any debris caused by the infection or by the response. The hallmarks of inflammation are redness, swelling, heat, pain, sometimes also loss of function. The added events that take place during inflammation are added blood supply and capillary permeability and migration of neutrophils then macrophages to the site. 

Inflammation

It is the process where leukocytes engulf, digest and kill the microbe. Cells attachment occurs by PRR's binding to PAMP's and by opsonins. 

Phagocytosis

If a pathogenic microorganism makes its way past the body's first line of defense (including mechanical and chemical barriers) and is not evaded by extracellular processes of the innate immune system, then intracellular defenses of the immune system are essential. These defenses include: 
- phagocytosis
- inflammation

The Immune System

The innate immune system contains many proteins and molecules that are essential to extracellular, and therefore intracellular, defense. The epithelial cell lining of the gastrointestinal and urogenital tract contain mucosal membranes and antimicrobial substances that prevent a pathogen from causing severe damage to the individual's health.
