Purpose of the paper is to "incorporate the benefits of having action plans in the complex domain of writing, while mitigating the time and effort costs of creating plans" 3 phases:

• 1. using a data driven qualitative coding of 264 comments to compile a vocabulary of 18 functions for writing tasks using comments on wikipedia articles and academic papers.
• 2. see how plans are created using the vocabulary and comparing using vocabulary plans to create unstructured plans which are plans that are made without aids. The two settings they are looking at this is an online study and a lab study.
• 3. to see how useful the plans are, they ask people what is there preferred method of accomplishing a task which is comments, the unstructured plan or the vocabulary plan.
