Isotonic Environment

A hypertonic environment has more solute on the outside of the cell. Water moves out of the cell which causes the cell to shrink and crenate.

Hypertonic Environment 

Hypotonic solutions have a lower concentration of solute on the inside of the cell. In this environment, water diffuses into the cell which causes it to swell and eventually bursts it.
