Experiences and Support Recommendations for University Students with Psychiatric Disabilities

A study on university students with psychiatric disabilities revealed mixed educational experiences. Among 14 observed students, 9 found support systems through staff counselors. However, students also reported negative experiences with professors and staff, including blatant discrimination, microaggressions, and a failure to provide proper support. Recommendations to better support these students include: (1) fostering feelings of inclusion, (2) increasing collaboration with mental health providers, and (3) providing training for faculty and staff regarding psychiatric disabilities.
