Josef Breuer was a distinguished Viennese physician who collaborated with Sigmund Freud in the early stages of psychoanalysis. He treated the famous patient Anna O. using a method that would become known as the "talking cure." Breuer's professional relationship with Freud eventually ended due to a fundamental disagreement over Freud's conclusion that hysteria was caused by childhood sexual abuse.
