Julia as a Representative Example of a Borrower Exhibiting Impatience

Julia serves as a key example to illustrate the choices of a borrower and the concept of impatience. To make the analysis of intertemporal choice more concrete, Julia is presented as someone who could be impatient for two main reasons. While her family covers her basic necessities, she wishes to consume more in the present. Her starting point, or endowment, is the $100 she expects to receive in the future, with no funds for immediate consumption. Her consumption possibilities and the trade-offs she faces between consuming now versus later are depicted in Figure 9.3. Julia's situation can represent various borrower profiles, such as a payday loan user, a farmer borrowing for planting season, or a new graduate needing funds before their first salary.
