Justifying the Baseline for Economic Gain

A company develops a new production method that significantly lowers its costs. Before this innovation, the company, along with its competitors, was using the most cost-effective method available at the time. To calculate the economic gain from being the first to adopt the new method, the company must compare the new production cost to a baseline. Analyze why the correct baseline is the cost of the previously most efficient method, and not the cost of an even older, less efficient method that was also available but not in use by any firm.
