1. Treat obvious symptom clusters, not broad individual symptom complaints.
2. Carefully consider the safety and side-effects of selected medications and avoid medications with the potential for abuse.
3. Pick strategies that promote medication adherence.
4. Be mindful of potential interactions between psychotropic medications and abused substances.
