Language training in nonhuman primates

Nonhuman primates can't produce human speech because they lack the vocal tracts and repertoires to do so. However, studies have shown that they can use symbols, such as hand gestures for communication. Apes were able to learn the American Sign Language and chimpanzees were able to learn computerized symbols that form short sentences.
