The law of effect can be observed in a work environment. Most people continue to go to work primarily because they receive payment for their services. This payment acts as a satisfying consequence, reinforcing the behavior of showing up for the job. If the payment were to cease, it is highly probable that the behavior would also stop, even if the individual enjoys their work.

Initially proposed by psychologist Edward Thorndike, states that behaviors are influenced by their consequences. Specifically, behaviors followed by satisfying outcomes are more likely to be repeated, while those followed by unpleasant outcomes are less likely to be repeated. This principle, further developed by B. F. Skinner, underpins the idea that learning is driven by reinforcements and punishments, motivating behavior based on the nature of the consequences.

Refers to the application of a consequence to strengthen or increase the likelihood of a specific behavior. In addition, reinforcement can be positive or negative. Both positive and negative reinforcement increase the likelihood of a specific behavioral response.

Reinforcement

Punishment is a consequence aimed at weakening or decreasing the likelihood of a specific behavior, and it is often most effective when applied immediately after the undesirable action. Punishment can be positive, involving the addition of an unpleasant consequence, or negative, involving the removal of a pleasant one. In both cases, the goal is to reduce the recurrence of the target behavior.

In the context of operant conditioning, reinforcement and punishment serve opposite functions in modifying behavior. The primary goal of reinforcement is to increase the likelihood that a behavior will be repeated, either by adding a desirable stimulus (positive reinforcement) or removing an undesirable one (negative reinforcement). Conversely, the goal of punishment is to decrease the likelihood of a behavior, either by adding an aversive stimulus (positive punishment) or removing a desirable one (negative punishment).
