Levels of Processing and Encoding Effectiveness

Memory recall is significantly influenced by the depth at which information is processed during encoding. Semantic encoding, which involves engaging with the meaning of information, represents a 'deep' level of processing and leads to superior memory for verbal material. In contrast, visual and acoustic encoding are considered 'shallower' processing levels because they deal with superficial characteristics like appearance or sound, resulting in less durable memory traces.
