Light Pollution: China

Researchers studying China found light pollution may have varied as a result of lock downs during the COVID-19 outbreak.

  • When measured using Nighttime Light (NTL) radiance, researchers found light pollution generally increased in residential areas, decreased in commercial areas, and stayed roughly the same in transportation and public facility areas. On average, light pollution across the country decreased when compared to values from previous years.
  • Researchers note that average light pollution values increased again following the end of COVID-19 lock downs.
