Limitations of the Study
While the researchers did draw many conclusions about post-natal livelihood of the child, there are a few limitations to this retrospective study.
When combing through the database of studies on this topic, the researchers acknowledge that the studies they chose did not control for concurrent illness, smoking, or drug use. This means that many of the conclusions (high correlation of depression, hyperanxiety, attention deficits, and hyperactivity in offspring) drawn from these studies cannot be seen as strictly due to stress of the pre-natal parent, as drug use and smoking could also contribute to predisposition of issues with emotional regulation for the child.
