Lip Reading in an Online Environment

To accommodate general users of video conferencing, most organizers do not require video cameras to be turned on. However, for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals who may use lip reading in order to receive communication from others, this cuts off an avenue for them to visualize audio inputs. But even if it were always required to turn on cameras for meetings, video lagging due to poor internet connection could also interfere with their ability to lip read. Automated captioning opens up a channel of communication in online environments where in-person channels of communication have closed.
