The local gist refers to the meaning associated with each individual concept in isolation. Neuschatz, Lampinen, Preston, Hawkins and Toglia (2002) The local-level representation (the local gist) conveys rudimentary or literal meanings of the semantic molecules of the discourse.

The gist traces capture the essence and meanings of the representation in a general and prototypical sense (Brainerd & Reyna, 1993; Lampinen, Leding, Reed & Odegard, 2006).
They can be classified as global gists or local gists.

The global gist refers to the property or theme that characterises the collection of concepts and their relations within a piece of information as an integral entity. (Neuschatz, Lampinen, Preston, Hawkins and Toglia (2002) The global-level representation reifies people’s interpretations of meanings via a mental framework that organises the relations among the explicitly or implicitly stated notions into a coherent whole, which may also predict further developments in the text (Graesser, Singer & Trabasso, 1994).
