These schemas, often formed during childhood due to adverse experiences, contain themes of loss, failure, and inadequacy. They can lie dormant for years until activated by stressful life events, at which point they trigger dysfunctional and pessimistic thoughts.

Depressive schemas are mental predispositions that cause individuals to view things negatively. According to Beck's theory, these schemas are built around themes such as loss, failure, rejection, worthlessness, and inadequacy. They are thought to develop from adverse childhood experiences and, once activated by stress, they generate dysfunctional and pessimistic thoughts about oneself, the world, and the future.

Depressive Schemas

This example illustrates how internal beliefs determine emotional outcomes following an event. When faced with a failed test, an individual who internalizes the belief 'I'm worthless and stupid' may develop depression. Conversely, an individual who thinks 'I'm smart, but I didn't study for this test. I can do better' is less likely to become depressed. This highlights the core cognitive principle that one's interpretation of an event, not the event itself, is the primary cause of emotional distress.
