Maintenance of OCD Compulsions via Operant Conditioning
The second stage in the learning model of OCD involves operant conditioning, specifically negative reinforcement. An individual learns that performing a compulsive behavior or mental ritual reduces the anxiety caused by an obsession. This removal of an unpleasant feeling (anxiety) reinforces the compulsive act, making it more likely to be repeated in the future.
