In order to assess cognitive load, the students were given surveys to complete throughout the semester. In addition, the surveys asked questions that evaluated each type of cognitive load. For example, on a scale of 1-7,  the students were asked how much they agreed with the statement, one being strongly disagree, and seven being strongly agree.

There were nine sections in the course, and five were control groups meaning they were given no special instructions for collaboration. The other four sections were asked to take collaborative notes in small groups. Each group collaborated on google documents, one for each week, and took multiple-choice quizzes in which they were allowed to use their notes.
