Neurons are excited and inhibited by frequencies to help sharpen the frequency responce and allow for discrimination.

Medial geniculate nuclei

A key component of the auditory thalamus, the medial geniculate nucleus serves as a critical relay station in the auditory pathway. It receives auditory signals from the inferior colliculus and transmits them to the auditory cortex for higher-level processing.
