In this study, researchers wanted to investigate the role of mediators in the spacing effect and test the mediator hypothesis.

Mediators can be created in both massed and spaced practices. However, mediators formed during massed practices are easily forgotten by the time of the actual test. Mediators formed during spaced practices tend to be longer lasting, which partly explains the spacing effect.
