Methods in Dialectical Behavior Therapy to Enhance and Maintain Therapist Capabilities and Motivation

Standard dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) includes a weekly therapist consultation-team meeting, when DBT therapists meet. The team helps therapists problem-solve ways to implement useful treatment despite specific clinical challenges (e.g., suicidal patients, patients who miss sessions). Additionally, the team encourages therapists to maintain a compassionate, nonjudgmental attitude toward their patients; monitors and reduces therapist burnout; provides support and encouragement; and occasionally employs structured training on specific therapeutic skills.
