Ways the damaging effects of self-harm can be reduced are:

  • Reducing the frequency of self-harm
  • Making smaller or less severe injuries
  • Using different instruments and making sure they're sterile
  • Redirecting behaviors to less damaging but still stimulating ones like holding ice or eating spicy foods
  • Assembling a first-aid kit
  • Joining a support group
