Ways the damaging effects of self-harm can be reduced are:
- Reducing the frequency of self-harm
- Making smaller or less severe injuries
- Using different instruments and making sure they're sterile
- Redirecting behaviors to less damaging but still stimulating ones like holding ice or eating spicy foods
- Assembling a first-aid kit
- Joining a support group
