The modality effect occurs when presenting mutually referring information partly in a visual mode and partly in an auditory mode—rather than both visually—reduces extraneous cognitive load. Because the visual and auditory channels of working memory are partially independent and each has limited capacity, distributing information across both effectively expands working memory.
