Negative effects of autistic masking
Although masking can help individuals to get ahead in the world and to fit in better on a superficial level, individuals who mask heavily (those with or without a diagnosis of autism) often suffer ill-effects from the prolonged masking. People who mask heavily report feeling a loss in their sense of identity, that masking can be physically and emotionally draining, and that masking prevents people from getting to know them as they really are.
