The link between neuroinflammation and cognition differs between subgroups. For example, inflammation was only positively correlated with cognitive impairment in patients who: 
- did not use drugs or alcohol 
- were experiencing acute psychotic symptoms

Peripheral inflammation and increased central immune system activation have been linked to poorer cognition function in individuals suffering from schizophrenia. However, the results from these studies are mixed and cannot provide conclusive evidence.
