Neutralization of the Parasite

Vaccination induced significant IgG antibody and cell mediated immune responses. Vaccine efficacy is determined upon quantitative analysis of fecal egg counts (measures worm burden and indirectly measures disease burden). Analysis of these egg counts will occur at a specific time following vaccination that will be chosen based on epidemiologically determined rates of reinfection. The Na-ASP-2 vaccine will only affect the larval stage of hookworm infections and is not isolated to adult hookworms that are already present in the host’s GI tract. Therefore, deworming is a necessary public health measure that needs to take place in order to eliminate adult worms before the patient is vaccinated.
