New Criticism was supposed to break from the traditional methods and focus on the close reading of texts. Literature was viewed as an "aesthetic" independent of historical context and a "unified whole." Therefore, the focus was purely on the text, along with formal structures, such as paradox, ambiguity, irony, and metaphor, etc.
